Frank Kilborn Civil War letters, 1862-1864.

The collection consists of ten letters written by Frank Kilborn to his parents and to his brother, Albert, beginning on September 13, 1862, soon after the 11th Vermont Heavy Artillery Regiment arrived in Maryland. The letters contain information on visiting Washington D.C., camp life, work details, and descriptions of the countryside near camp. The collection also contains two letters and three telegrams relating to Frank's illness and death of diptheria on April 13, 1863. Also included in the collection are Morning Reports from Company G, 14th Vermont Volunteer Regiment, made by Captain Noble F. Dunshee, dating from October, 1862 through July, 1863 when the regiment was discharged. There is also a letter addressed to Captain Dunshee from Adjutant General Peter T. Washburn about raising a company from Vergennes and Monkton, Vermont, dated December 22, 1864.

Peter T. Washburn, son of Reuben and Hannah B. (Thacher) Washburn, was born on September 7, 1814 in Lynn, Massachusetts. His family moved to Vermont in 1817 and settled in Ludlow, Vermont in 1825. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1835 and then studied law under his father. In 1838 he was admitted to the bar and began to practice law in Ludlow. In 1844 he moved his practice to Woodstock and formed a partnership with Charles P. Marsh until his death in 1870. Peter T....

Frank Kilborn was born in Orwell, Vermont on January 6, 1844, the son of Hiram and Betsey (Fifield) Kilborn. Frank enlisted in Company C of the 11th Vermont Volunteer Regiment on August 11, 1862 from Poultney, Vermont. He died of diptheria on April 13, 1863.
